Summary

Some U.S. taxpayers are leaving the U.S. to live abroad for a number of reasons and start a new life elsewhere. When they leave, they may be subject to the expatriation tax, which applies to U.S. citizens who renounced their citizenship and are no longer U.S. residents for federal tax purposes. There are different rules to apply, depending on the date of expatriation.
