Renewing Your Credentials

Maintaining your NATP credential demonstrates your continued commitment to professional development and the standards associated with the credential you have earned.

NATP credentials are renewed annually. All credentials expire Dec. 31, and credential holders must complete the applicable continuing education and other renewal requirements for each credential they hold.

Renewal applications open Nov. 1 each year and must be completed by Dec. 31.

For 2026 renewals only, NATP is waiving credential renewal fees as a one-time benefit to credential holders.

Credential holders must still complete all continuing education and other renewal requirements. Renewals may be subject to audit to verify compliance with continuing education and credential requirements.

Representation credentials

To renew your representation credential(s), you will need to:

  • Maintain an active IRS-recognized credential in good standing. Continuing education completed to maintain that designation fully satisfies NATP’s CE requirements for the ATPR and AATPR credentials. No additional CE or CE reporting to NATP is required.
  • Meet NATP's professional and ethical requirements.
  • Complete the annual renewal process by Dec. 31.
  • Pay the applicable annual renewal fee (unless waived).

If you hold both the ATPR and AATPR, each credential must be renewed to remain active.

Representation credential renewal cycle

Credentials earned between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31 are valid through Dec. 31 of that year and must be renewed for the following calendar year.

If your credential application is approved between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, your credential will be valid through Dec. 31 of the following year, with no separate renewal required during the year of approval. Your first annual renewal, including applicable continuing education requirements and the annual renewal fee, will be due by Dec. 31 of the following year.

Individual tax credentials

To renew your individual tax credential(s), you will need to:

  • Complete the continuing education requirements for your credential.
  • Ensure your IRS PTIN is renewed and valid for 2027.
  • Meet NATP's professional and ethical requirements.
  • Complete the annual renewal process by Dec. 31.
  • Pay the applicable annual renewal fee (unless waived).

If you hold both the AITP and AAITP, each credential must be renewed to remain active.

Individual credential renewal cycle

If your credential application is approved between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, your credential will be valid through Dec. 31 of the following year, with no separate renewal required during the year of approval. Your first annual renewal, including applicable continuing education requirements and the annual renewal fee, will be due by Dec. 31 of the following year.

Credentials not renewed

If you don’t complete the required renewal process by Dec. 31, your credential will expire and will no longer be considered active. Once your credential expires, you can no longer represent yourself as holding an active NATP credential.

Please contact NATP at [email protected] for information about restoring an expired credential.
