What can business clients do in the IRS Business Tax Account?

If you last checked the IRS Business Tax Account (BTA) when access expanded this spring, there’s already more your clients can do. Since NATP’s April 9 update, the IRS has added more digital notices, downloadable employer identification number (EIN) verification, offer in compromise (OIC) payments and, as of Aug. 6, 2026, the ability to view and pay toward an existing payment plan.

For tax pros, the question has now changed from, “Can my client get into BTA?” to “Can we handle this through BTA before calling or mailing the IRS?” IRS Fact Sheet FS-2026-11, issued in July, and IR-2026-87, issued Aug. 6, document the latest additions. What a user can see or do still depends on the business type and the user’s role.

Who can access BTA?

BTA is available to sole proprietors with an EIN, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, tax-exempt organizations and federal, state, local and tribal governments. Individual partners and S corporation shareholders may also qualify for limited access if they have an SSN or ITIN and receive a Schedule K-1. For these limited-access users, access is limited to tax years for which the IRS has a Schedule K-1 on file.

More business tax payments can happen inside BTA

Eligible users can manage both balance-due payments and federal tax deposits through BTA, all in one place. They can also schedule payments up to one year in advance, cancel scheduled payments, store multiple bank accounts in an online wallet and review recently processed payments, including certain payments made through the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), wire transfer, check or money order.

The newest payment feature arrived Aug. 6. Users can now view an existing payment plan’s balance and other details and make a payment toward that plan. Eligible business taxpayers can also make OIC payments through BTA, a capability that the IRS was promoting as of May 14.

One distinction is worth flagging: Businesses can make OIC payments through BTA, but they cannot submit the OIC application itself through the account.

Lost EIN proof just got a lot less painful

A business that cannot find its original EIN assignment notice may have another option besides requesting Letter 147C. Designated officials can now download Notice CP575, Notice of New Employer Identification Number, directly through BTA.

The digital CP575 can substitute for the original CP575A-J notice series and Letter 147C when written EIN confirmation is needed. The IRS says it can be used with banks and other institutions, including when a client needs EIN verification to open an account or obtain other business services.

More IRS mail is moving into Business Tax Account

BTA’s digital notice library is expanding. Recently added notices include CP081B, We May Have a Refund for You; CP211A, Application to file extension of time approved; and CP134R, Federal tax deposits discrepancy - Due a Refund. Additional notices are available as well.

BTA can also provide eligible users with transcripts for various business tax returns, including payroll and excise tax returns. Depending on the business type and user role, users may also request a tax compliance check or verify the business name and address on file with the IRS. Eligible employees can also be given account access.

Check Business Tax Account before you call the IRS

Before reaching for the phone or preparing a paper request, check whether BTA can already handle what the client needs.

Client needs to… Can BTA help? What to know
Check an IRS balance Yes View balances online.
Pay a tax balance or federal tax deposit Yes Payments toward current- or prior-year liabilities and federal tax deposits may be available.
Schedule or cancel a payment Yes Payments can be scheduled up to one year ahead.
Check payment history Yes Includes certain EFTPS, wire, check and money order payments.
Save bank information Yes Multiple accounts can be stored in the BTA wallet.
Check an installment agreement NEW View the balance and details and make a payment toward an existing plan.
Make an OIC payment NEW Payments can be made through BTA, but the OIC itself cannot be submitted there.
Replace missing EIN verification NEW Download digital Notice CP575 instead of obtaining Letter 147C.
Retrieve an IRS notice EXPANDED More digital notices are available, but not all IRS notices are included.

Check IRS entity information Yes View the business name and address on file.

Give an employee account access Yes Access varies by entity type; users must also meet the applicable eligibility and role requirements.

Before turning a business client’s IRS notice, missing EIN letter, payment question or account issue into a phone call, check BTA. The IRS has added enough functionality in 2026 that a task your client previously could not handle online may now be available there.
