VITA and TCE awards expand free tax help nationwide
The IRS recently announced the award of $53 million in grants for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. These grants support organizations across the country that provide free federal tax return preparation and electronic filing for individuals and families who need affordable tax help.
This year, the IRS awarded grants to 315 VITA applicants and 48 TCE applicants, out of 479 total applications requesting more than $79 million in funding. The awards will help VITA and TCE sites serve their communities during the 2026 filing season by expanding taxpayer access to no-cost tax preparation services.
What VITA and TCE do
The VITA program, established in 1969, focuses on providing no-cost federal tax return preparation to underserved populations. This includes low and moderate-income taxpayers, people with disabilities, those who speak limited English and others who may not have access to paid tax services. IRS-trained and certified volunteers prepare basic tax returns and help taxpayers claim key credits such as the earned income tax credit and child tax credit.
The TCE program, established in 1978, focuses on taxpayers age 60 and older. Volunteers assist with returns that often include retirement income, Social Security benefits and other age-related tax issues. Services are commonly provided at senior centers, libraries and community organizations.
Community partnerships and impact
Grant recipients receive IRS support to maintain quality standards and consistent training for staff and volunteers. The IRS works with nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, educational institutions, and employers to deliver VITA and TCE services.
For tax professionals, VITA and TCE programs also serve as trusted referral options for clients with simple returns or limited resources. Referring eligible clients helps ensure compliance while freeing up time during peak filing season.
How tax professionals can get involved
Tax professionals play a critical role in the success of VITA and TCE programs. Experienced preparers are especially valuable as volunteer instructors, quality reviewers and site coordinators. Volunteering allows tax pros to give back to their communities while sharpening technical skills and staying connected to taxpayer challenges across all income levels.
Tax pros interested in volunteering can locate nearby VITA or TCE sites, local sponsoring organizations or sign up through IRS.gov. Whether you contribute a few hours or take on a leadership role, your expertise can help ensure accurate returns and expand access to essential tax services for those who need it most.
