Celebrating 2026 National Women’s Small Business Month
Every small business has a story. Some begin with a handful of clients or a leap into entrepreneurship. Others grow from family traditions or years of experience in the tax profession.
This National Women's Small Business Month, we're sharing stories from women business owners in the NATP community. From independent tax practices to multigenerational family firms, these women have taken different paths to building their businesses.
Meet the women who shared their stories with us and learn more about the businesses they've built.
Johanna Alburquerque, Scala & Co. – Pennsylvania

Scala & Co. is a multidisciplinary advisory firm helping individuals and small businesses navigate taxes, accounting, HR, and financial decisions with greater clarity and confidence. I founded Scala with the belief that business owners deserve more than transactional services. As a tax professional, HR practitioner and business owner, I bring a practical, compliance-focused approach to every engagement. Through Scala & Co., I work closely with growing businesses on tax preparation and planning, bookkeeping, payroll support, HR compliance and strategy, and financial guidance. Building the firm has allowed me to combine my background in psychology, human resources, taxation and business operations into one advisory practice focused on helping clients make informed decisions and build stronger businesses. For me, entrepreneurship has also been a continuous process of learning, adapting and becoming more intentional about the kind of firm I want to build. Organizations like NATP have been an important part of that professional development by providing education, resources and a community of tax professionals committed to doing the work well.

Jessica DeJesus, TaxSpace – Pennsylvania

TaxSpace started with me helping friends and family with their taxes after work and on weekends. As it grew, I saw that many people, especially small business owners, needed someone they could turn to throughout the year, not just at tax time. Today, my team and I help individuals, businesses and nonprofits with taxes, bookkeeping and the financial questions that come up along the way. We also share what we know through workshops and community outreach, because understanding your finances shouldn't depend on already knowing whom to ask.

My practice is located in Haddonfield, New Jersey, and serves more than 500 personal and business clients with tax preparation, planning and representation services.
Dorothy Havey, 1040 Tax & Accounting Services – Maine

For more than 45 years, I've had the privilege of helping individuals and small businesses navigate taxes, accounting, and the financial questions that come with running a business and planning for the future. I'm especially proud to be a woman-owned, locally operated small business right here in Belfast, Maine. I understand small business because I live it, too. I know the importance of having someone you can call with a question, someone who knows your history and someone who takes the time to explain, not just prepare a return and send you on your way. My practice has always been built on relationships, experience and personal service. Many of my clients have been with me for years, and I consider that one of the greatest compliments I could receive.
Esther Jozwiak, Jozwiak Tax & Accounting LLC – New York

I am an enrolled agent, and I work with individuals, families and small businesses on their tax preparation, tax planning, bookkeeping, and IRS and state issues. One of the things that is important to me is helping people understand their taxes. I don't want clients to just receive a tax return and have no idea what it means. My goal is to take the mystery out of taxes and help my clients understand what we are doing and why. I use technology to make the process easier for my clients. Clients can upload their documents through a secure portal, communicate with me and keep track of where their return is in the process. I also provide a video review of tax returns so clients can go through their return with me and understand the results. I don't look at tax preparation as something that happens only once a year. I want to be available to my clients throughout the year when they have questions or when something happens that could affect their taxes. I try to be someone they can call before making a financial decision rather than after the fact when it is too late to do anything about it.
Dr. Sharon Mason-Love, A-Countability Plus Tax Service – Georgia
I am the founder of A-Countability Plus Tax Service, LLC. With more than 23 years of experience in the tax industry, I provide tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services for individuals and small businesses. I take a personal approach to helping my clients understand their finances and tax responsibilities. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is teaching and mentoring other tax preparers. Through hands-on training, coaching and ongoing support, I help new and experienced professionals strengthen their tax knowledge, organize their businesses and gain confidence in serving their clients. Whether someone is just getting started or ready to grow an established practice, my goal is to share practical guidance and lessons from my own experience to help them build a successful, sustainable tax business.
Martha Nest, Westview Tax Services – Kentucky

I began preparing tax returns part-time in 1980 in the state of Maine after completing a certificate program in Income Tax Accounting at the University of Maine. At the time I was in the Coast Guard Reserves, married with six stepchildren and after going back to school for small business management I became the "CFO" of my husband's business. After retiring from the Coast Guard and leaving my husband's business in 1997 with the same 10 clients, I called those clients and asked for 10 referrals each! Everyone came through and in 1997, I was in practice full-time with 100 clients. I joined NATP in 1998 and used their educational offerings to become an enrolled agent in 2005. By 2009, my practice had grown to a firm preparing about 500 returns when I decided to move to Kentucky. Before relocating, I transferred 100 clients to another tax practitioner, keeping only the clients with more complex returns or small businesses. I am most proud of the fact that when clients refer me, they say, "Just call Martha, she will help you." The business that I have carved out for myself gives me great satisfaction. It is stressful at times as I am a solo practice, but I would not have it any other way. This business has enabled me to be a successful entrepreneur and has given me a good life with meaning and purpose.
