IRS Tax Penalties/Resolving Issues

Description

IRS penalties are charges imposed for failing to meet tax obligations, such as late filing, late payment, or inaccurate reporting, and they can accumulate over time with interest. States assess penalties on taxpayers for noncompliance. Tax professionals face a variety of potential penalties and states have jumped on the bandwagon assessing their own penalties on the paid tax preparation community. This module will examine the variety of penalties members of the National Association of Tax Professionals may encounter in the ordinary course of the tax business.

Description

Ethics is a vital part of the annual continuing education for tax professionals. Artificial intelligence is now a daily tool in tax practices, many not realizing that it is being used. Practitioners use AI to draft correspondence, summarize tax law, assist with research, and support tax planning discussions. However, while technology has evolved, Circular 230 still exists. AI is a tool and not the paid preparer in the eyes of the IRS. No matter how advanced AI becomes, Circular 230 requirements do not change. The duties of competence, due diligence, confidentiality, and professional judgment remain solely with the tax practitioner.
