Preparing a tax return requires knowledge in both tax law and its application. After you’ve learned tax law, you must learn how to apply it to the tax return. In this hands-on course, you'll learn the basics of individual income tax reporting with a step-by-step analysis of Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and its accompanying schedules. Learn to identify what schedules and forms you need to prepare based on the information provided by the client. At the end of this course, you will be prepared to complete basic income tax returns.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify a taxpayer’s filing requirements and filing status
- Identify who can be claimed as a dependent
- Summarize different types of income and adjustments to income
- Explain the difference between itemized deductions and the standard deduction
- Distinguish between nonrefundable from refundable income tax credits
- Differentiate between nonrefundable and refundable income tax credits
- Calculate a taxpayer’s federal income tax liability
- Prepare Form 1040
Course details
Completion of reading assignments prior to the instructor-led sessions is highly recommended. Instructor-led sessions will occur Oct. 17, Oct. 19, Oct. 24, and Oct. 26 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. CT. During the sessions, the instructor will discuss main concepts and apply real-life scenarios. Throughout the sessions the learners will have the opportunity to ask questions. Learners will be provided with a recording of each session. Course ends with homework to complete case studies.

The self-study portion of this online training includes the Introduction to Tax Preparation course with access to 16 CPE for AFSP, EA, CPA, CRTP. To earn CPE, you must complete a final examination.
