A new law provides small businesses with a tax credit for providing health insurance coverage to their employees. Small businesses must work through complex computations to determine if they are eligible for the small employer health insurance tax credit. Often business owners are looking to their tax preparers to help them to determine if they qualify for the credit. Even if the small business qualifies for the credit, the cost of time spent gathering information for and calculating the credit may outweigh the actual tax benefit received. Tax preparers should be knowledgeable about the credit so that they can easily identify their clients who would benefit from the credit.
