This session will provide a basic understanding of trusts and their tax reporting as well as knowledge of the proper tax reporting for a decedent's estate. We will also review the completion of Form 1041, including the calculation of fiduciary accounting income, distributable net income, and the income distribution deduction. At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: • Understand basic trust terminology and have a working knowledge of the types of trusts most frequently encountered at the tax desk. • Know where to report income from trusts of different types. • Describe the difference between a simple and a complex trust. • Know the filing requirements for Form 1041 for estates and trusts. • Understand the significance of the various elections that are available to trustees and executors. • Be able to calculate FAI, DNI, and IDD for a trust. • Complete Form 1041, U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts. We will also demonstrate the completion of Form 990-EZ. At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: • Understand the significance of tax-exempt status and the importance of compliance with Internal Revenue Code in order to maintain the organization's status. • Describe the types of organizations that are governed by IRC §501(c). • Provide an overview of the application process for an organization wishing to qualify as a tax-exempt entity with the IRS. • Describe the filing requirements for the 990 series of forms and other forms that may be required by tax-exempt organizations, including due dates and penalties for late filing or non-compliance. • List those organizations that are exempt from filing Form 990, unless unusual circumstances exist. • Know how to complete a Form 990-EZ and be familiar with the various schedules that may also be required.
