Divorce involves the division of many things such as family, finances, income, home, personal property, and investments. There are many opportunities for tax planning before, during, and after divorce. This course discusses those opportunities. It does not attempt to discuss the legal aspects of divorce.

    Objectives

      Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

      • Explain the five tests that must be met for a taxpayer to claim an exemption for a person (dependent) other than his or her spouse.
      • Properly treat third-party payments.
      • Identify the types of property settlements.
      • Explain the basics of community property.
