- Establish filing status.
- Complete page 1 of Form 1040.
- Determine eligibility to claim exemptions or dependents.
- Identify and report the most common types of income.
- Complete Schedule B.
- Identify and report the most common adjustments to gross income.
- Compute itemized deductions by completing Schedule A.
- Calculate the total tax.
- Identify and report the most common credits.
- Report total payments.
- Complete and submit a basic Form 1040 to the IRS.
