Summary
This course will explore select in-depth topics related to individuals. It will go into detail about health savings accounts (HSAs), health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs), net operating losses (NOLs), puts and calls, early distributions from retirement plans and IRA, the foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign housing deduction.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  • Determine if an individual is eligible for a health savings account.
  • Report contributions and distributions from HSAs on Form 8889. 
  • Understand the tax benefits associated with a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA).
  • Determine who qualifies for the foreign earned income exclusion.
  • Examine housing deduction or exclusion.
  • Complete Form 2555.
  • Discuss social security issues when working abroad.
  • Compute a net operating loss.
  • Carryback a net operating loss to prior tax years.
  • Compute a net operating loss carryforward.
  • Understand the rights of a holder of a put or call.
  • Determine the tax treatment of holding an option and properly report the exercise or lapse of such option.
  • Identify situations when the 10% additional tax applies.
  • Determine if an exception is available to avoid the 10% additional tax on distributions from IRAs and qualified retirement plans.
  • Report the early 10% tax and any applicable exceptions.
  • Comprehend how the 6% excise tax applies to excess contributions of IRAs.
  • Understand the consequences of making excess deferrals to qualified retirement plans and how they are reported.
