With the original tax credit only in its second year and the addition of Reserve Peace Officers this year and as President of the Iowa State Reserve Law Officers Association, here is a link to the IDR webpage https://tax.iowa.gov/volunteer-firefighter-and-emergency-medical-services-ems-personnel-and-reserve-peace-officer-tax and a more in-depth article I wrote on the ISRLOA website http://www.isrloa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=24&Itemid=14
I urge you, if you have clients who are Iowa Sheriffs or Police Chiefs, or Reserve Liaison Officers or Reserve Law Enforcement Officers, please inform them of these websites so departments can provide their certified reserve officers with the necessary information to prepare their tax returns.
Melinda Garvin had a pink handout to mail to clients that Randy or someone was going to copy and make available to September seminar attendees. I'd sure like a copy of that if anyone can post it or send it to me.
Last week in the newsletter there was a statement about amending the 2011 and forward tax returns of military pension recipients for a new exclusion which was retroactive to 2011. I sent for a clarification from Jim McNulty at the Iowa Dept of Revenue. He sent me a clarification as follows;
The new military retirement pay exclusion applies to 1/1/2014 and after.
The exclusion for active duty military pay was enacted in 2011 and is retroactive to the 2011 tax year. (This is not new legislation)
I hope this may help to clarify the information from last week's newsletter to others out there.
